Williams Rates Webber as F1 Title Contender

Frank Williams admitted that he looks at his decision to let Mark Webber go at the end of the 2006 season with great regret, as he is now convinced it wasn’t the Australian to blame for the poor results his team was recording at the time.

According to the most experienced team owner in the F1 paddock, the 33-year old has now developed into a fine, strong driver, whom he personally rates with good chances to win this year’s title in the series.

When we had him our car was a disappointment, and we felt that he was part of the problem - but he probably wasn't actually with hindsight. He has developed himself, believed in himself I am sure, and probably charmed everyone around him at Red Bull,” said Williams in Monaco, according to Autosport, talking about his past relationship with driver Mark Webber.

Mark has risen, there is no question. It shows in equal cars that Mark is on top form, providing Vettel is also on top form. It is pretty even-stevens actually,” added the Williams F1 majority owner, following Webber’s 3rd pole position this season, in the Principality.

Webber came to Monaco after a perfect weekend in Barcelona, where he started from pole position to lead every lap to his first win of the season. As compared to the driver he used to know, Williams believes his strong performances week in and week out are the result of Webber’s looking at things more calmly.

Two or three years ago I would have said that Mark put himself under too much pressure, but I don't see any evidence of that now looking from the outside. He is cool and calm within himself, and what you are seeing is real,” concluded Williams.
