Mark Webber on Pole for the Monaco Grand Prix

Mark Webber was the fastest driver in the qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, with the Australian having his strongest opponent in Renault's Robert Kubica.

The Renault ace emerged quickly as the man to beat, posting a Q3 time 1.1 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Kubica went even faster the next lap, but Webber was going faster still, lapping the Monaco street circuit in 1m14.104s.

Kubica then replied with a 1m14.120s lap, when Webber produced a stunning 1m13.826s in his final lap, snatching the pole-position in style. With Webber's Monaco performance, Red Bull remains the only team which won pole-positions in all of the races this season.

Webber’s teammate, Sebastian Vettel, was third faster, ahead of Q1 leader Felipe Massa, the only Ferrari driver in the qualifying after Fernando Alonso crashed during practice and ended up with a damaged chassis.

McLaren had an equally disappointing session, with Hamilton and Button finishing fifth and eighth, with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher sandwiched in between.

Rubens Barrichello was ninth, the best result in qualifying for Williams on a dry track this year, while his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg was eleventh.

Liuzzi managed to finish in the top ten, but Adrian Sutil missed the superpole and finished 12th. Renault’s Vitaly Petrov hit the Sainte Devote barriers during Q2 and will start 14th, ahead of the Saubers and Jaime Alguersuari. Alonso will start from the back of the grid following his crash in practice.
