There’s something about white cars that apparently makes them irresistible. At least that’s what a new study done by PPG Industries says, hiding under the fancy title of ‘Annual Automotive Color Popularity Data’. Looking over what they found it’s actually easy to see how they came up to these results.
PPG is a leading manufacturer of transportation coatings. Their activity therefore revolves around such things and their study is extremely reliable being taken into account by various companies in their strategies.

According to them, white cars accounted for 23 percent of the cars sold last year followed by red cars with 20 percent, black cars with 18 percent, gray with 16 percent and silver with 15 percent. Those are the results for the North American continent though, even if the worldwide numbers are only slightly different.

In the luxury segment, where BMW is fighting, white is still the most popular choice but the percentages for the other colors differ a bit. Therefore, right under white (that accounts for 24% of the cars sold) you’ll find black (with 22 percent), silver (with 20 percent), gray (16 percent) and red coming in last (with 7 percent).

The reasons behind the popularity of these colors are rather easy to point out actually. They are considered more tasteful, timeless and flattering, not to mention the fact that they are basically fool-proof compared to brighter colors.

Not only that, but the color chosen for the interior has a thing or two to say as well, since most people don’t want their cars to feature extreme contrasts. To top it all off, this sort of colors tend to be in style for longer times compared to flashier choices.

The study also claims that some people choose their car color depending on how well it will fit to their house color or with other cars and some went as far as to say that they take into consideration the outfits they wear while driving. That’s a bit too much.
