Webber Thinks Mercedes Not Good Enough for Title Fight

As far as Mark Webber is concerned, the battle for the 2010 Formula One championship will undoubtedly unfold as a 3-horse race, considering the pace shown by the front-running teams in the first three rounds of this year's campaign. The Aussie doesn't seem that impressed with Mercedes GP, but admitted that Ferrari and McLaren have clearly shown they're very strong this season.

I think Ferrari and McLaren are very strong – clearly it's three teams already. Mercedes are doing okay but it's Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull who are the most consistent at the moment in terms of pace,” said Webber, previewing the Chinese Grand Prix this season.

So far, each of the three teams named by Webber has won a race apiece, while only Ferrari and Red Bull managed to score 1-2 finishes in Bahrain and Malaysia respectively. However, in 2 of those 3 races, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton – two title rivals for sure – had to start from the back of the field, and the way they moved up the pack was impressive to say the least.

Nevertheless, another point worth making is that Red Bull Racing has experienced reliability problems in both Bahrain and Australia, venues where the team was deprived of some worthy wins because of a faulty spark plug (Sakhir) and damaged wheel casing (Melbourne).

We won the last three races of 2009 and we knew we had a good car coming into this year. We've been very fast in Bahrain, we should have won that, but for a spark plug problem and a wheel problem for Sebastian in Melbourne. It's just frustrating - we should have won the first two races,” said team boss Christian Horner, who insisted his team should keep the momentum following the win at Sepang through the Chinese weekend as well.
