Webber Refuses No 1 Status at Red Bull... Yet!

With 7 rounds remaining in the current Formula One season, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel seem equally-chanced to catch Jenson Button in the overall classification. Although at a considerable point margin to the Brawn GP driver – 18.5 and 23 points respectively – the two have recuperated heavily towards Button and are therefore entitled to still hope for the 2009 crown.

Talking to the media on Thursday, Webber insisted it is not yet time for Red Bull Racing to appoint a leading driver for the remaining rounds of 2009. Even if that might cost the Milton Keynes team some valuable points in the title fight – as compared to rivals Brawn GP – the Aussie driver believes the 4.5 point advantage to Vettel does not call for such a measure right now.

Webber didn't forget when he was in the same situation as Vettel's a few races ago, when everybody was asking team principal Christian Horner to pick the German driver as leader of the team in the championship. Only 3 races later, the situation is reversed and Webber is well aware he needs to continue pushing for good results in order to gain that No 1 status within the team.

Ah, that particular question's now for me,” said Webber in an interview with Formula One's official site, referring to the Red Bull having to pick a leading driver for the remainder of the ongoing season.

If we are both slowly catching Jenson – which is still a tall order – then it's a good problem for the team to have because one of us will get him. If only one of us is catching, then maybe the roles will change a bit in the future,” added the Aussie.

As confirmed by Red Bull this morning, the team has already secures its drivers' lineup for the upcoming season, as they've inked a 2-year extension with Vettel. The German will drive for the Milton Keynes team for an additional 2 years, while Webber has already secured a one-year extension for 2010.
