Nixie is a drone the size of a wrist watch that was created for Intel’s “Make It Wearable” competition, in which 10 teams of young entrepreneurs developed their proposals into working machines. Now it turns out the boomerang-camera won the contest and the team behind the project will be taking home $500,000 in prize money, which they’ll presumably use to help fund their research and development.
Intel’s challenge started 11 months ago, with the goal of inspiring the next big idea in wearables. Part-competition, part-entrepreneurial mentorship program, the challenge attracted thousands of global participants. From the 10 finalists that made it to the end, the company announced the winner on Monday.
“For team leader Christoph Kohstall, project manager Jelena Jovanovic, and team member Michael Niedermayr, what started off as a flying pair of glasses is now a wristband that unfolds into a remote-controlled flyable camera, and the winner of the $500,000 Make It Wearable prize,” the winners are described on the competition’s website.
We did already wrote about the ground-braking device that will probably be especially designed for those who are into adventure sports, as it could work even better than a GoPro camera.
The ultimate selfie device
The Nixie quadcopter will pretty much automate everything from taking selfies to filming your devil-may-care stunts. Thanks to its features it can either follow you around and snap photos and videos, or you can use it in “boomerang” mode where it will fly away, take a photo and fly straight back.
