Waze won't add a weather overlay in the navigation app, as the company says this feature is not part of this year's update roadmap.
Users who took to the Waze suggestion box for feature requests explain that a weather overlay would help know "more about driving conditions," eventually making the road more predictable.

Waze's traffic reporting system allows users to report incidents on the road, including accidents, speed traps, potholes, roadkill, and traffic jams. The other motorists approaching the flagged location receive a notification, getting extra time to slow down and act accordingly. Eventually, Waze makes traffic conditions more predictable.

A weather overlay would have the same purpose, as drivers can see the forecast for their current location and destination.

Third-party applications already provide similar functionality, including Weather on the Way, displaying the current temperature and the changing conditions as you approach your destination. Thanks to an integrated radar, users can anticipate the upcoming conditions and tell more accurately if they're likely to encounter rainy conditions.

Waze doesn't seem interested in adding such capabilities to the application, as the 2023 product roadmap has already been finalized.

Unfortunately, Google Maps doesn't have a weather overlay, though it displays the current temperature when browsing a specific location. If you use Google Maps to explore other regions, the application updates the weather information. You're not getting the full forecast but only the current temperature in the top left corner of the screen.

Apple Maps pushes the concept to a new level, allowing users to expand the weather information widget to access the complete forecast. However, the application still doesn't show the weather on the route to the destination, as you can only see the information for your current location and other regions you explore within the app.

Waze already allows users to report weather-related traffic conditions, such as fog and flood, so additional information would significantly improve navigation and safety behind the wheel. A voice alert of current weather conditions, mixed with alerts and notifications regarding wind and thunderstorm status, would be used for drivers, especially during long journeys.

While the Google-owned company has already rejected the idea, claiming it'll keep it in mind for future updates, users might be disappointed by its reaction to such popular feedback. The original suggestion was posted in September 2012, so seeing the company reject it after nearly 11 years is disappointing.

In the meantime, Waze seems to focus on other improvements, though the company did not reveal the 2023 feature roadmap for the application. New features are certainly coming, but without any specifics in this regard, we'll just have to wait and see what the company comes up with on mobile devices and infotainment screens via Android Auto and CarPlay.
