The guys from Motorhead Magazine put together one of the most epic hill climb events of the year on the Mazda Turnpike that just so happens to be located on the Hakone Mountain. In case you didn’t know, that’s basically one of the places where drifting is practiced on the regular.
And understandably so, to be honest, since the Japanese are the ones that invented the damn thing in the first place. However, the drivers that lined up at the starting line were not necessarily famous for going around corners sideways.

Some are actually involved in other kinds of motorsport like the Super GT series in which BMW is currently taking an active part. The car they use? A BMW Z4 GT3, of course.

As a matter of fact, there are plans to unify the DTM and the Super GT events into one global championship that would involve both German and Japanese cars going at it against each other. Earlier this year, DTM Champion Marco Wittmann even raced in Macau alongside his colleague, Augusto Farfus.

This time, the Z4 GT3 was driven by Ara Seiji, the one that races it also in the Super GT Series on the regular as part of the BMW Sports Trophy Team Studie. This year he finished 3rd but his resume includes a win at Le Mans in 2004 and other notable performances.

He also had the courage to race an older Ford GT40 on the high speed track even though controlling it requires a lot more effort, especially at higher velocities.

Other racers brought their own cars to the track, including various GT-Rs and Subarus, some drifting along the course while others simply racing up the hill, everything in the name of... adrenaline! Oh, and we also were left with an impressive video you can watch below.
