BMW currently uses the Z4 in various motorsport events. Basically, apart from the DTM where the M4 is being used, the roadster is the weapon of choice in every other event. The TUDOR Championship in the US is one of them.
Over there, the Turner Motorsport Team managed to win the GTD championship, for example, with one of their Z4 cars. That exact racer was then handed over to a journalist, to drive and see exactly how it feels. That lucky guy was Matt Farah from Drive, who also tested a stock model not too long ago.
What you should also know is that this is no stock Z4, of course. Apart from the exterior aerodynamic body kit that is different depending on the class, it also uses a different engine.
The plant under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated version of the 4.4-liter V8 used on the E92 M3 GTS. However, it was drastically improved to keep up with the demanding challenges in the series. For example, the power output was taken up to 515 HP which is the highest rating in all competitions.
The weight of the car is around 1,190 kg (2,624 lbs) depending on what kind of class it’s racing in. The transmission is a 6-speed semi-automatic with paddle shifters while the rear LSD is mechanical and has its own oil cooler.
However, the Turner Motorsports car driven by Matt here is a GTD version which means it is slightly different than the GT3 we told you about earlier. The differences are restricted to the aerodynamics, ABS and traction control systems that are not allowed in GTD. Other than that, they are the same.
