VW Would Consider F1 Entry If World Engine Will Debut

German carmaker Volkswagen has finally admitted interest in a Formula One programme, but only under a few circumstances. The first and most important one is related to a “world engine” proposition launched by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) in recent years, which VW would feel very comfortable with in case they decide to enter the series.

The world engine idea was touted by the FIA, as it would mean the F1 manufacturers would develop engines that can otherwise be used in other motor racing categories.

It is clear that we are looking at Formula One. We are waiting for the FIA's decision in respect of the use of a world engine for formula one. If there is (a world engine) we will discuss whether to build it for Formula One,” said Hans-Joachim Stuck, a former grand prix driver and now the motor sport representative of Volkswagen.

Additionally, Stuck made it very clear that even if they decide to invest in a Formula One operation, VW will not choose the Mercedes or BMW way (fellow countrymen) in developing a factory team, but only come as engine suppliers in the series.

Given those comments, it's even harder to assume that the German carmaker will indeed make this step in the upcoming few years, given that the world engine idea is currently unpopular among the existing F1 manufacturers. Instead, they appear to favor a switch from the current 2.4 litre V8s to 1.5 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder units, alongside a more powerful Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

Such an engine would make it to the F1 rulebook from as early as 2013, but discussions on the final formula of the engine are still ongoing. Until then, the FIA is looking to push for more fuel efficient 2.4 litre V8s for the seasons to come.
