Europe’s greatest carmaker, Volkswagen and its Chinese partner FAW Group are planning to develop their business in the Chinese market by building a new facility in the country.
According to the 21th Century Business Herand newspaper via Reuters, the plant, Volkswagen’s fifth in China, will manufacture cars for the Seat brand. It will be located in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
The automaker’s other 4 plants are located in Shanghai, Nanjing, Changchun and Chengdu, producing the Jetta, Bora, Golf and Audi among others. In addition to that, Volkswagen has a tie-up with Chinese SAIC Motor Corp, making the Passat, Santana, Polo and Skoda brand cars.
Volkswagen aims to consolidate its current position of biggest foreign carmaker in China. A few months ago, the carmaker presented its plan to invest 4 billion euros in China until 2011 to expand its production capacity and also enhance research & development. The first step of this plan will be to increase the production capacity in two of the existing plants, as Reuters wrote.
The company registered sales of 1.4 million units in Mainland China and Honk Kong in 2009, representing a 39 percent increase over the 2008 figure. Volkswagen plans to double its sales in China by 2018 and, according to some rumors, it wants to introduce 20 new models on this market between the current year and 2012.
