VW Golf Wagon Gets to Australia

Volkswagen has been building the Golf Wagon since its third generation Golf hatchback from 1991, but the family version never got to Down Under. That’s all in the past now, as the German manufacturer officially launched the Golf MK IV Wagon in Australia.

Volkswagen Group Australia press and PR manager Karl Gehling said the company would not divulge projected sales forecasts for the Golf Wagon, saying only that: “We see that there is a market there”. According to Gehling, The Golf Wagon will have to battle Peugeot 308 Estate and Hyundai i30 CW, as well as the shoppers of medium wagons such as the Mazda6 and Ford Mondeo.

The Golf Wagon’s prices start under Au $30,000. The entry level is the TSI Trendline with a manual gearbox and costs Au $26,990 (plus statutory and dealer delivery costs), which is just $2000 more than the equivalent five-door hatch.

The Trendline TSI develops 90 kW at 5000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1500-4000rpm. The car can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 9.9 seconds if equipped with either the manual or the DSG gearbox, and consumes an average of 6.7L/100km (manual) and 6.2L/100km (DSG). Treehuggers need to know that the entry level Golf Wagon produces 156g CO2/km (manual) and 144g CO2/km (DSG).

The most expensive version will be the Comfortline TDI which produces 103 kW at 4200rpm and 320Nm at 1750-2500rpm. The car needs 9.7 seconds to get to 100 km/h and has a fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km combined and the C02 output is 149g/km. It costs Au $36,490 with a DSG gearbox.
