German carmaker Volkswagen decided to shelve plans to start production of the Amarok, as the company is waiting to see the development of certain markets initially slated to receive the SUV. According to an autocar.co.uk report, Volkswagen believes the SUV market is already saturated and decided to wait before rushing to introduce the vehicle.
“Across the group we already make the Touareg, the Cayenne, the Q7, the Q5 and Tiguan,” said VW Group financial boss Klaus-Dieter Schurmann. “That's five cars in this class. You could say, do we really need another?”
According to specifications released back in December, the truck will come, at first, in a four-door version with "double cab", with the single cab version to arrive in the first half of 2011. It is powered by a choice of two engines: a 2.0 TDI with common rail injection engine, developing 163 PS and 400 N of torque at 1,500 rpm and a four cylinder TDI, which will be added in the first half of 2010.
The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, which will be the single one available for both engines. The engines' power will be taken to the ground by the use of three drive concepts: full-time all-wheel drive, switchable all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. The base version of the Amarok comes with rear-wheel drive.
Volkswagen initially planned to debut the car in South America this year, South Africa and Australia to follow. Europe was due to receive it in the second half of 2010.
