Video of the dangerous stunt a 19-year-old driver from Lancaster, UK, pulled on a public road has been made public, as part of his trial for dangerous driving.
The incident actually occurred in March this year and was caught on the dash cam of a fellow motorist going in the other direction. It shows the man, Daniel Costin, driving his Volkswagen Golf at 50 mph while completely hanging out of the car window, with one hand on the hood and the other on the wheel.

Perhaps just as startling is the fact that he’s doing so while driving on a busy public road. There’s a line of cars behind him and many others in front, so him losing control of his own vehicle could have resulted in a tragedy.

That’s exactly what the judge told him when she sentenced him to 12 months in jail, a fine, legal costs and a driving ban, iNews reports. Costin argued that he had gotten “carried away” and that the incident was a momentary lapse that had already cost him a great deal, but he also admitted he was posing for pictures for a woman in a car in front of his.

The judge gave him a stern lecture, reminding him of the dangers of this type of behavior.

“You told the probation officer that you made a momentary decision which has ruined your life. You are very fortunate it didn’t ruin a great deal of other lives. What you did was staggeringly, breathtakingly stupid – you drove your car on a road with which you were not familiar,” the judge said.

“A busy road, in a line of traffic approaching a roundabout, with cars coming in the opposite direction, with virtually no control of that car whatsoever,” she continued. “Fortunately, no alcohol or drugs were involved but it was more than a number of moments.”

The video shown in court, which represented all the evidence needed for a conviction, is available below.
