Here’s one man who must be counting his blessings as we speak. It’s not likely to be involved in such a serious accident and get to walk away unharmed, but this driver is beating the odds.
A road in Chelmsford, Essex was shut down after the van of a local oven-cleaning firm exploded as it was going down the street. Despite the powerful blast that completely totaled the car, the driver managed to walk away from the wreckage on his own – with only minor injuries.
CCTV footage caught the actual moment of the blast. You can see it at the bottom of the page. The white van rolls into the frame with all its doors bent outwards from the force of the explosion, and a second later, the driver runs out of the vehicle, to safety. He seems confused but he’s clearly not injured.
No other people or cars were involved, though the street was covered by debris. Police shut down the road to investigate and then clear it all away.
Residents on the street tell the local media that the explosion was so strong their windows and even the house walls rattled. They rushed out and were surprised to see the driver alive.
Sergeant Manny Lawrence tells EssexLive that the accident wasn’t caused by foul play, but an investigation is still underway.
“Not an everyday sight. Vehicle explosion in Chelmsford today due to faulty valve on bottle of propane. Fortunately the driver had superficial injuries. Working in conjunction with the East of England Ambulance Service and Essex Fire,” Lawrence says.
Police also credit the driver with being able to stop the car without causing another accident. Come to think of it, considering what he’d just been through and that he must have been in shock, it’s a pretty neat thing what he did.
