The brilliant idea sparked in the mind of GENeco and was fueled to completion by the South West Regional Development Agency. GENeco brought to UK's Avonmouth sewage treatment plant, near Bristol, all the equipment it needed to make the concept a reality, got their hands on an otherwise ordinary Volkswagen Beetle and convinced it to swallow...
Well, we don't want to be yucky, but it's enough to say GENeco believes there's enough s**t going around Bristol in a year to power the Bio Bug for a 10,000 miles (16,000 km). If all the yucky stuff coming into Avonmouth (avon-mouth?!) would be transformed to power cars, 19,000 tonnes of CO2 would be cut each year, GENeco says.
"On first hearing of the Bio-Bug, some people will smile, and some people will go ‘yuck’! Either way, what I hope they realise is that this is exactly the kind of innovation we now need for a more sustainable world – and those directly involved should be proud they’re making a small but significant contribution to it everyday!" said Jonathon Porritt, founder of the Forum for the Future, an UK based sustainable development organization.
Soon, after the conclusion of the tests, a part of GENeco's fleet will be converted to run on smelly gasses (relax, it doesn't really smell).
