How hard do you think it would be for Volvo to enter this car, a V90 Shooting Brake, into production? I'm seriously pondering this thought. The designers could be sent home early, as removing the rear door and making the V90 a little shorter is as easy as tying your shoe laces.
The company must have some coupe seats lying around the plant, so the fact that it's only got two doors and a tailgate shouldn't be too bothering either. Somebody would have to rethink the rear half of the interior, but it wouldn't be too great of a creative effort - just move the seats forward if the wheelbase is shortened, or simply make a smaller trunk floor if that's the only place that gets shrunk. Easy-peasy.
The engineers can focus on other projects as the mechanical bits wouldn't be affected at all, so the only ones with reasons to complain would be the assembly-line robots. Only they didn't bother to unionize, so who cares about what they think anyway?
The world needs a proper shooting brake, and those offered by Mercedes-Benz aren't good enough (the CLS Shooting Brake - to be discontinued - and the CLA Shooting Brake). The one model that comes closest to what a shooting brake really should be costs nothing short of a fortune - it's the artist formerly known as FF, currently going by the name Ferrari GTC4 Lusso.
But this Volvo V90 Shooting Brake would be just right. It's easy to see why there aren't that many companies flocking to build cars with this body style: some people look at it and think "my god, that's still a wagon, no matter how hard you try to disguise it," while others say "great job, you've ruined a perfectly useful wagon and turned into a clown's car." And then there are those who see both glasses half-full: it's a car more beautiful than a wagon and a lot more practical than a coupe. And what's not to like about that?
