Volvo Launches Updated DRIVe Models

Volvo announced that it has upgraded its eco line of models. Dubbed DRIVe, the automaker’s green range has received a modified 1.6 liter diesel powerplant for the C30, S40 and V50 models.

The powerplant, which now meets the Euro 5 emission standards, has been mated to a six-speed manual transmission that also features a Start Stop function. This allows the S40 and V50 models to return CO2 emissions of 99 grams per km. The emissions level corresponds to a fuel consumption of 3.8 liters per 100 km (62 US mpg).

The two models join the Volvo C30, which has already been available in a 99-gram version.

"We've cut another five grams compared with the previous version. This means that both the S40 and the V50 are at the very top of their respective segments in terms of fuel economy," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Product Development at Volvo Cars.

Volvo’s range also includes two vehicles that fall bellow the 120 grams of CO2 per km limit: the V70 (119 g) and the S80 (119 g). At the beginning of next year, these will be joined by the S60 (under 115 g) and the V60 (under 119 g).

"Developments have proceeded swiftly since we presented our first three 119 gram models in Paris in autumn 2008. The fact that we will soon have seven models below 120 g/km, three with emissions below one hundred grams, shows that few of our competitors can beat us in the drive towards increasingly eco-efficient cars," Jonsson added.
