Swedish automaker Volvo has received government approval to build a second factory in China. The new plant will be placed in the city of Daqing and will cost about 4.6 billion yuan ($754 million) to build.
According to Automotive News, "Volvo Car's proposed plant in Daqing has been approved 'in principle' by China's State Council", but details on when production will start have yet to be revealed. However, the source claims that the new plant will produce up to 80,000 vehicles a year at first, with assembly capacity to be expanded at 300,000 at a later stage.
The Daqing factory will build SUVs, MPVs, gasoline-powered sedans and electric vehicles.
In other related news, the company's first Chinese factory, which is located in Chengdu, will start building an extended wheelbase version of the S60 sedan in the second half of the year.
