The Swedish carmaker has souped up its Drive-E powertrain family, with the new engines set to be introduced on the recently unveiled 2015 Volvo V40. Depending on their needs and preferences, customers now have the possibility to choose between a D4 oil burner with 188 horsepower on tap or a T5 twin-turbo petrol rated at 242 horsepower.
In the United Kingdom, the least expensive Volvo V40 in D4 guise starts from £28,000 (€28,650 in the rest of Europe) for the Kinetic trim level and the six-speed manual gearbox. Even though it is slightly more powerful than the former generation, this updated D4 motor boasts with an outstanding 85g of CO2 per kilometer, making it the most eco-friendly turbo diesel powerplant in the segment.

But the most important aspect is the torque it offers: 400 Nm are more than enough resources both in heavy stop and start city traffic and for overtaking at motorway speeds. According to the Swedish manufacturer, the 2015 Volvo V40 D4 uses just 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (combined) thanks to an all-new gizmo called i-ART.

This pompously named technology utilizes pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of relying on a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail. Each of the four injectors is mated to a microchip that monitors injection pressure, making sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle according to revs, the quality and temperature of the air sucked in by the intake system and other variables.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is offered as an optional extra throughout the Drive-E lineup, but this gearbox is best suited if coupled to the revamped T5 twin-turbo gasoline engine. How much do you imagine a high-strung 2.0-liter turbo petrol returns on the combined cycle? Well, not as much as most of you might've guessed. Volvo is adamant that the 245 horsepower T5 mill mated to the auto box will drink just 5.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on the combined cycle.

Besides the updated Drive-E engines previously mentioned, customers of the 2015 Volvo V40 hatchback can now opt for the Sensus Connect infotainment system, that can be further specified with an improved top-of-the-line Premium Sound system by Harman Kardon. Also new for the 2015 model year, Volvo offers three new exterior colors (Osmium Grey, Ocean Blue II and Power Blue) as well as 18-inch silver bright Tamesis alloys.
