After earlier this year German carmaker Volkswagen presented the world with the Up concept, the manufacturer is at it again in Los Angeles, where it unveiled the sugar-free version of the L1, dubbed Up! Lite (marking about the fifth concept based on the same platform)...
According to VW, the Lite is the world's most fuel-efficient four-seater, having an estimated fuel consumption rate of 2.44 l/100 km (70 mpg highway). This amazing figure is achieved thanks to a combination between a turbo-diesel engine, an electric motor and 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). As a direct consequence, the Up! Lite emits some 65 g of CO2/km.
The engine has a 0.8l displacement and develops only 51 PS. The electric motor adds 10 kW of power, as it acts as a pulse start module (starter, alternator and E-drive). In all, the combination between the two output 65 PS, enough to allow it to accelerate from naught to sixty in 12 seconds and top at 160 km/h (100 mph).
The concept has two operating modes, coast-down (without the use of the TDI engine) and electric (Up!'s electric motor uses energy from a lithium-ion battery to propel the car over short distances.)
The Up 1 features all the advancements achieved today in terms of safety: ESP, airbags and safety frame of aluminum, steel and carbon fiber.
"Both technically and visually, the Up! Lite is a preview of the future. The image of the car body with its clean lines, as though sculpted from a block of aluminum, underscores just how fascinating a car tuned to aerodynamic perfection can look," VW says about the Up! Lite.
