Volkswagen Teasing Golf GTE Plug-in for British Market

Ever wanted to get Prius fuel economy from a car with Golf GTI performance? Of curse you did, otherwise Volkswagen would have never put the Golf GTE into production. This is a brand new concept from the guys in Wolfsburg lab coats, who though a plug-in hybrid with over 200 hp would be a great addition to the range.
Unfortunately, being such a controversial powertrain and a brand new nameplate, the GTE has not been approved for that many markets. Britain is the biggest 'question mark', though considering it's one of the biggest hot hatch markets there's no reason to be worried. We think it will go on sale in Britain come late summer, costing from about £28,000.

We could find out the truth about the Golf GTE as early as the next Gadget Show Live event, scheduled to take place from 9 to 13 April at the NEC. There, the first plug-in hybrid Golf ever put into production will be on display, together with the e-Up! and the record-breaking 313 mpg XL1.

Contact with the electrified Golf came in March, when the GTE made its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show. There, we learned that its 204 PS is provided by a combination of 1.4-liter turbo and electric motor. Acting together, they can take the Golf GTE from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 135 mph (218 km/h).

Those numbers are all comparable with the Golf GTD, which at £25,565 is going to be cheaper than the electric model. But the fact that you can drive in pure EV mode for 31 miles (50 km) might tip the balance to the even point.
