Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 Scores Impressive 1-2 in Nurburgring

With the Nurburgring 24 hour race now over, manufacturers which took their vehicles to the track now step up and highlight their vehicles' performances on tarmac. Volkswagen is no exception, as the Germans focus on what their natural gas and petrol powered engines managed to do at Nurburgring.

The Scirocco GT24-CNG with innovative EcoFuel technology won the category for vehicles with alternative powertrains (AT) and finished 17th overall. This vehicle was driven by Vanina Ickx, Peter Terting, Klaus Niedzwiedz and Thomas Klenke.

The second place in the AT class also went to a Scirocco, the one driven by Ulrich Hackenberg, Bernd Ostmann, Peter Wyss and John Barker.

"We’re extremely happy: We achieved the hat-trick in the two-litre turbo class and also proved that the Scirocco GT24-CNG powered by natural gas is a viable alternative. I’d like to express sincere praise to our drivers who mastered a difficult task consistently well. Due to the changes to the regulations the field has become clearly more competitive," Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport director said.

"What used to be lapping in the past has turned into an infinite number of overtaking manoeuvres. At the end of the day, the strong performance of the entire squad made the difference, which enabled us to achieve the double class victory through careful preparation and perfect work during the race," added the official.

The Nurburgring event was also the first public appearance of the Scirocco R, the most powerful vehicle in its line-up.
