After years of listening to stories about cars, you come to one logical conclusion: all navigation systems are crap. Some are dated, some have stupid graphics and others take minutes to set. That's why nobody uses them to get to work.
Volkswagen, who's navigation systems used to be overpriced and boring, is trying to change. The German company has a special division that looks at this sort of stuff, and it seems to have come up with a learning curve, memorizing the regular routes.

Why would you want the nav to know where you do your nine-to-seven? Because this way, it can tell you where the traffic jams are, among other things. The system is called Regular Routes, and it works automatically, so you never have to worry about turning it on.

If you are on your way to work at a regular hour or headed to your in-law's house on a sleepy Saturday, Regular Routes will see if a jam has occurred and suggest alternative routes.

So, how much does it cost? Nothing, actually, since the latest generation of the Discover Media and Discover Pro radio-navigation systems from Volkswagen come with Regular Routes as a standard feature.

This system seems to have been born from necessity, as Germany has worse problems than you think. According to the" Trafic Index" Stuttgart, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, and Berlin, which in that order are the five most congested cities in Germany. The home of Porsche and Mercedes is actually worse than New York.

Nobody uses the navigation to do the regular trips. It doesn't make sense because you know the way already. Having a device that sees congestion happening saves time and fuel. In the long run, it's stuff like this that will have a positive environmental impact.

After a route has been taken once, it is stored in the navigation system. Up to three of the most frequently driven routes are then listed in the infotainment system in line with the given day of the week and the given time of day.
