Volkswagen Infotainment Powered by Harman

Automotive infotainment and audio supplier is on a roll this year, having already signed several contracts (or extending existing ones) with established manufacturers. Before the year ends, however, Harman announced it had signed another one, this time with German car maker Volkswagen.

Harman will be supplying the Volkswagen group with the next-generation infotainment systems it is currently working on. The gadgets will not find their way into VW cars alone, but also in the ones badged Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda.

“We are delighted to extend our long-standing relationship with Volkswagen Group across the leading automaker’s wide range of vehicles,” said Dinesh C. Paliwal, Harman CEO.

“We are honored by their continued confidence in HARMAN and look forward to delighting new Volkswagen Group drivers with exceptional infotainment solutions blending high performance with driver safety and convenience.”

The new system, which will begin rolling off production lines soon, will be the first in the world to integrate the new TI Jacinto 5 SOC (system-on-chip) technology. The unit will allow for the integration of a telephone module, a complete set of tuner modules, a six-channel high performance class-D amplifier, DVD-Drive and a computing module.

Earlier this year, Harman announced the same system would be fitted on vehicles produced by Mercedes Benz, the Fiat-Chrysler alliance and BMW. The first cars equipped with this system will become available in 2012.

Harman is the company which developed the Halosonic sound technology (an active noise technology developed to make the car hearable in its surroundings), showcased on the Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid at the 2010 Geneva International Auto Show.
