Volkswagen Golf GTI VII to Get Carbon Edition

Volkswagen has taken a lot of criticism over for the sixth-generation Golf GTI. The hatchback took a more leisurely attitude to being hot, and as a result only had 210 hp, not enough to take on the extreme Megane RS, which started out with 250 and is not a 265 hp car.
Much of the same sort of attitude to speed is also expected with the MkVII Golf GTI, which is expected to have 225 PS (222 hp). In case that number seems familiar, it’s exactly the same as the old Megane RS, the one based on the strange “shake it” hatch.

Thankfully, the Golf itself is lighter, thanks to the MQB platform, and the GTI could be made lighter still. Volkswagen is reportedly preparing something called the Carbon GTI, which will ha aluminum panels and a carbon fiber roof and bonnet. Weight reductions could amount to as much as 200 km (441 lbs) over the current GTI.

The car could be sold as a 40th anniversary nod to the 810kg bare bones MkI GTI of the 1970s.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
