After the launch of Volkswagen’s hot version of the Polo, the GTI, rumors have been circulating that the automaker could expand its Polo range with to include Polo GT and Polo GTD models. The pair could give VW fans the same driving thrills, while delivering better fuel economy.
A recent Es.autoblog article suggests the GT could come with the 1.4-liter TSI engine, developing around 150 hp, and a DSG gearbox, similar to its Spanish sister, the Seat Ibiza FR. This would mean the GT will be almost as powerful as the previous generation GTI.
The GTD might broaden the range even further, and should be equipped with a 1.6-liter mill that develops in the region of 130 hp. Some reports put the launch date of the two new models around the end of 2011, so it’s still to early to speculate on technical details or pricing.
However, the new Polos should cost more than €20,000, seeing as the GTI sports a pricetag of almost €24,000 in Europe. Both models should be available as three-door and a five-door versions and will weigh around 1,150 kg. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time is expected to be in the low 7-second range for the GT.
“Our aim is to inspire young people for Volkswagen brand products – in an international dimension. This campaign gets us close to customers and at the same time gives us the opportunity to engage in an intensive dialog with them," Luca de Meo, Director of Marketing, Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said in the a press release announcing the hottest Polo version.
