German automaker Volkswagen has reportedly approved an all-wheel-drive wagon based on the next-generation Golf as a Subaru Outback rival for the US market.
According to Automotive News, Volkswagen endorsed a “Golf-based Jetta SportWagen” that’s similar to the Alltrack concept introduced at the New York Auto Show in 2012. A bit confusing if you ask us, because the Alltrack was actually a Passat and the Golf never had such a version, but we’ll go along with this one until more details are revealed.
Whatever the name this production Alltrack will sport, it will face a very tough challenge on the US market, where the Outback is Subaru’s best-seller with 117,553 units delivered last year. Volkswagen’s current front-wheel drive Jetta SportWagen is priced at $21,390, about $2,000 cheaper when compared to the Subaru Outback.
