Visteon Announces New Multi-Function Display

The world of in-car infotainment is about to heat up, after one of the biggest automotive suppliers in the world, Visteon, announced it was working on a new generation multi-function displays (MFD).

The new system will be built using a new Renesas microprocessor, one which allows, according to Visteon, the integration of functions which were previously performed externally. The processor which make it all possible is being supplied by Renesas Electronics.

This means that in the future, the hardware required to operate MFDs will be smaller than before. The new units will be able to incorporate in-vehicle camera applications with both NTSC and PAL video formats, 2.5 megabytes of additional random-access memory and a high-speed serial flash interface.

The new Visteon MFD will be able to support Wide Video Graphics Array (WVGA) thin-film transistor displays, while at the same time complying with industry standards including OpenVG.

"Visteon is a leading supplier of multi-function displays and other cockpit electronics products to major vehicle manufacturers globally, and we expect this new platform architecture to broaden our customer base even further," said Christian Feltgen, Visteon's global director of cockpit electronics technologies.

No details on when the new technology becomes available have yet been made public.

Visteon managed this year to emerge from bankruptcy, coming back onto the market a renewed company in October this year. The new, restructured company, focuses on four product lines: climate, electronics, interiors and lighting. Some of those technologies (40 climate and interior systems products) were displayed in the C-Beyond show car presented at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.
