Navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps can easily become a double-edged sword if they're not used right.
In theory, these software solutions should be able to get you from where you are to where you want to be as fast as possible, using shortcuts that avoid traffic jams and other incidents potentially slowing you down.
But in practice, the likes of Waze can send drivers on unfamiliar roads that make a trip more stressful, sometimes leading to ridiculous moments such as cars driving in a forest.
This is precisely what happened recently in Malaysia. A TikTok video that has since gone viral shows the driver of a car and another vehicle in front going through what looks like a forest, allegedly because they were following the instructions provided by Waze.
As it turns out, the driver who filmed the whole thing was going from Sungai Beloh to Machang, Kelantan, but because of the heavy traffic, Waze suggested a faster alternate route. Both drivers apparently took this route without knowing they would eventually end up in a forest on an unpaved road that doesn’t necessarily seem suitable for regular cars.
While these applications aren’t always flawless and sometimes send drivers to the middle of nowhere, Waze recommending an unpaved road isn't by any means an error. The application comes with dedicated navigation settings where users can enable or disable unpaved roads, eventually allowing the route guidance to include or exclude them from suggested routes.
In this case, Waze certainly used unpaved roads for faster routes, so these drivers going through a forest can't blame the application for recommending a road that's not necessarily suitable for their cars. Sure enough, drivers shouldn’t use unpaved roads unless their vehicles are equipped with an off-road experience, which is why the option comes off by default in Waze in the first place.
Google Maps also supports unpaved roads, as do many other applications, but at the end of the day, it's up to users to decide how they want their routes to look. If anything, drivers should always pay attention to road signs, as nobody can blame Waze for entering a road where you're not supposed to be.
In the meantime, Waze is making other unnecessary changes to its routing engine, making the app more difficult to use when it comes to finding alternate routes. The CarPlay version now requires one extra step to find alternate routes, as the application has been updated to show a route preview screen before seeing all the other options to reach a defined destination. The new experience is already available in the latest version of the app for Apple smartphones, so if you updated Waze, chances are you won't like the way it searches for alternate routes on CarPlay.
