Villeneuve Joins BBC Commentary Box for Bahrain GP

Jacques Villeneuve may not have secured a Formula One racing spot for the 2010 season, but that doesn't mean he won't be present in Bahrain for the season opening round this weekend. It seems the Canadian driver will exchange the cockpit seat with the commentary box for British broadcaster BBC this weekend.

According to a report from the British website Autosport, the 1997 Formula One champion will join David Croft and former Honda driver Anthony Davidson in the commentary team for BBC's Radio 5 Live. However, his commentary commitments are only for the Bahrain race, as the BBC is yet to confirm a regular role for the racer through the 2010 season of Formula One.

Davidson, his commentary colleague for the weekend, has also pushed hard this winter to secure a spot in the 2010 Formula One roster, but the lack of sponsor backing dropped him out of contention. Consequently, he managed to sign a deal in sportscar racing, securing a spot in the 2010 American Le Mans Series.

As for Villeneuve, he was 99 percent confirmed by Stefan GP for the 2010 Formula One Championship, until the International Automobile Federation (FIA) made public the entry list for the upcoming season, last week. It was then confirmed that neither US F1 nor the Serbian team would secure an entry into the 2010 season, therefore ending the Canadian's chances of becoming the second world champion to make an F1 return this year (alongside Michael Schumacher).

Other racers that are currently employed by the BBC for commentary purposes during grand prix weekends are David Coulthard and Martin Brundle. Additionally, former GP team owner Eddie Jordan is also part of the commentary team that will analyze each race through the 2010 season for the British fans of the sport (and others as well, of course).
