A group of ten suspected illegal immigrants including a juvenile were found hiding the boots of brand new Maserati cars that were being carried on the back of a transporter in Egham, Surrey, last week. The fleet of luxury cars was on the way to the British dealership coming all the way from Italy when police have received a tip there might be something wrong with the package.
It turned out there were nine adults and a child hiding in the boots, as the transporter was pulled up outside the Maranello Maserati dealership last week. Believed to be Vietnamese, the immigrants had their belongings thrown in the back of the luxury vehicles, which had protective covers on the bodywork. According to a Surrey Police spokesman quoted by The Independent, the adults were taken to an immigration center in Dover while the juvenile was being referred to social services.
“Surrey Police was called to the Egham bypass in Egham at 1pm today following reports of suspected illegal immigrants traveling the boot of the vehicles on a car transporter,” he said. Police added that the driver of the lorry was not arrested.
For instance, in July 2013, the Home Office introduced an advertising lorry in London with its billboard saying “In the UK illegally? - GO HOME OR FACE ARREST - Text HOME to 78070 for free advice, and help with travel documents. We can help you return home voluntarily without fear of arrest or detention.”
