Vettel Eyes Ferrari Seat for the Future

Fernando Alonso is not the only driver aiming to wear the all-red equipment in the F1 paddock in the near future. Although the Spaniard is considered to have already secured a deal with the Scuderia starting 2011, Sebastian Vettel is himself eyeing a future move to Maranello. The German driver who brought Toro Rosso their first win in Formula 1, at Monza this year, made no secret of his passion for the red colors.

However, Vettel admitted that the first step towards securing a future deal with Ferrari was moving to a better place ahead of his 2009 campaign, meaning Red Bull Racing. The German driver acknowledged that proving himself at Red Bull could only benefit his future career in F1.

“It has always been my goal to one day drive for Ferrari, but continuity is also really important and that's why I am with Red Bull. And Ferrari knows how to build them (winning cars). They will be right at the front all of the time, because their resources are on a completely different level to ours at Red Bull. But I hope I will be making my own luck,” said Vettel in an interview for German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

Vettel is known to be Michael Schumacher's protege and might use this valuable card to his advantage in the near future. Considering that Felipe Massa's and Kimi Raikkonen's contracts with Luca di Montezemolo's team are to expire at the end of 2010, a future Alonso-Vettel team at Maranello is not totally off the scene.

Seven time world champion Schumacher insisted that Vettel has already proved he is a worthy talent for F1 and expects him to follow in his footsteps in the future.

“He has his own character, he needs to develop it, and then the results will come. He has the genes to become world champion one day, he's demonstrated that this year,” revealed Schumacher shortly after the Race of Champions in December.
