Vettel Explains Ferrari Joke

Sebastian Vettel explained his recent comments regarding a potential switch to Ferrari for the 2011 season, telling the media that all he was trying to do was joke on the potential of the Scuderia's new single-seater.

Earlier this week, the reigning world champion had joked in the media that he would pay for Fernando Alonso's one-year holiday through 2011 in order to secure his job at Maranello. However, talking to Germany's Auto Bild earlier today, the Red Bull driver made it very clear that his comments were only a joke and what he meant was to actually complement the Italians on their good job with developing the F150th Italia.

I was asked what I would do if for some reason I couldn't drive for Red Bull. So I said I would send either Fernando or Felipe on a great holiday so they could leave me their car,” said Vettel, according to the aforementioned source.

I said it because Ferrari will have a very strong car this season, so it would certainly be my first choice. But probably not everyone completely understands my sense of humour,” he added.

In addition, he insisted that while fancying a future job with historic marques such as Mercedes of Ferrari, having a car capable of battling for the world title will always count the most in his decision to leave Red Bull for another team. And since the Austrian team is currently the benchmark in F1 in terms of performance, he sees no reason to leave the boat right now.

Ferrari and Mercedes are brands with tradition which could be very stimulating to be part of their stories, but the performance of the car is always the focus,” he added.
