US Police Officers Start Preferring Honda over Harley Motorcycles

It been reported in Georgia, Richmond County, but reports from other places seem to confirm it: more US Police officers start favoring Honda motorcycles to the traditional, emblematic Harley-Davidson ones.

The Augusta Chronicle reported that the local sheriff's deputies have tested two Honda ST1300 since back in 2009 and since then, the number of Japanese machines continued to grow. In fact 2008 was the last year the local PD bought Harley-Davidson bikes.

Despite the higher price of the Honda bikes (around $2,300 or €1,770 more expensive), the officers riding them are pleased with the performance, safety and handling.

Another two great differences between the two have also been pointed out. First of all, Hondas are liquid-cooled, whereas Harleys are air-cooled, and this is a big issue during hot summer days or when riding at low speed.

The second difference is the way the two bikes accelerate. Cpl. Michael Lewis added: “The Honda will blow the Harley away trying to catch up to a violator. It takes the Harley a while to build up speed.” Finally, other features, such as the adjustable windscreen, handlebar positioning and superior braking power have been named in favor of the Honda.

It may have been a long love story between Harley-Davidson and law enforcement organizations in the US, since the first police bike came out in 1908, but it also looks like performance is more important than heritage when it comes to police work.
