German carmaker Audi is reportedly relying on its SUVs to become the number one brand in global luxury sales by 2020, a position currently held by BMW.
With worldwide demand for premium SUVs rising fast, Audi, now the world's second-largest luxury automaker, is keen to benefit form a projected market increase of at least 50 percent by 2020.
"By 2020, we expected global sales of SUVs to grow by at least 50 percent to 17 to 18 million units from about 12 million last year," Audi sales boss Luca de Meo told Automotive News Europe. "We want to benefit from this opportunity."
Audi's also planning to double its Q range, by introducing the Q2, Q4 and Q6 sportier versions of the subcompact Q3, compact Q5 and large Q7 SUV.
"Our current range is made of very functional SUVs. In the future, we will add a different type of Q model, emotional and very sporty," Audi CEO Rupert Stadler added.
