As it did for most other aspects of human life as we knew it, the global and still ongoing health crisis has completely changed the racing calendar for all car and motorcycle series. But despite the issue being far from solved, steps are being made for things to pick up from where they left off.
In the case of MotoGP, the first race was supposed to be held on March 8 at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. That race was canceled, and all the subsequent races were postponed until the such time they could be held safely.

We’re not sure if that point has been reached yet, but the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the series’ commercial and television rights holder Dorna Sports announced this week a new calendar for the MotoGP was agreed upon.

Following the Qatar race, the original calendar had an event in Argentina on March 31 and another in Texas on April 14. These two races were scrapped from the updated calendar as well, while the one scheduled for May 5 in Spain was pushed to July and became the season opener.

On July 19, MotoGP teams will align on the starting grid of the Circuito de Jerez, and then move on to what so far is just a 13-race season, ending on November 15 at another Spanish circuit, the one in Valencia.

FIM is taking into consideration extending the season to 17 races (close to the original 19 races of the now scrapped calendar) depending on how things are several months from now.

In case all goes well, the addition of the other four races (Texas, Argentina, Thailand and Malaysia) could push the end of the 2020 MotoGP season to December 13.

It’s not clear yet whether spectators would be allowed in for the races, as the organizers would probably have to follow the rules imposed by each country’s health authorities.
