The year 2011 should have represented the year when plug-in cars took off in the UK, and signs in the first part of 2011 were good, with 680 such vehicles registered until June 30th. However, the second part of last year marked a fall in sales of over 60%, with only 212 units sold.
Now, though, with the introduction of the £5,000 (€6,300 / $7,794) grant for plug-in vehicles, sales have picked up again and have already surpassed the 680 mark, with a total of 814 units sold until June 30th of this year. Vauxhall’s Ampera, the Nissan Leaf and even the Kangoo ZE are eligible for the grant, and the Brits will definitely take advantage of the grant by the thousands, we suspect, as of next year.
The UK is already lagging behind the rest of Europe, especially Germany, and they will try to do what they can, as a nation, to be at the forefront of European EV development and sales
