Highway roadworks are a real hazard. They force drivers, who are traveling around (and sometimes over) the accepted speed limit, usually above 110 km/h (70 mph), to slow down considerably, with not a lot of space to do it in.
Most, if not all, highway pile-ups are caused by any number of obstacles on one (or more) of the lanes, and cars are funneled into a single lane. This video from Russia very eloquently proves the point, as the truck / van with the dash-mounted camera is rear-ended by another vehicle, which was clearly traveling very quickly, as it was able to move the truck forward with considerable force.
Nobody appears to have been injured, but we can’t say for sure, as we don’t really know what went on behind the truck that got rear-ended. The moral? Always leave enough braking distance between you and the car in front, especially on the highway.
