Ever wondered how the whole LightCycle came to be the "sexiest, coolest vehicle you could possibly imagine"? How did this virtual vehicle, which caused a true Tron-mania among fans around the world, came to life? Well, today we bring to you the back story behind the LightCycle, courtesy of Fast Company.

Designer Darren Gilford was the brain behind the project, having been helped by Daniel Simon and a team of concept artists, together with whom he managed to create one of the most sought-after vehicles today.

Gilford said it all started with several 2D conceptual drawings that took inspiration from the original movie. The true challenge was to bridge the gap between the new and original design. He finally visualized a bike that basically grew into the rider,
compared to the closed canopy design of the ones from the first movie, but which keeps the lineage of Tron.

“You could see the rider--you could see his forms and his shapes, but blur the lines between where the bike ends and the rider begins,”
Gilford told Fast Company. “Light is such an important aspect of everything in Tron--how light wraps around things, how light carries your eyes from the front to the back of the vehicle. Light was the glue that held everything together.”

The hubless wheel design, however, was the most intriguing aspect of the concept ride. “One profile sketch really early on showed just a light line on a dark background with a dark bike. The light line was kind of the silhouette, and you saw the circles of the wheels and one light line that connected the rider between the two wheels,” the designer recalls.

Gilford says that he can call himself responsible only for 60%, as it was automotive designer Simon Daniel who made the final design. You can see the other sketches after the video.

Below you have a behind-the-scene look of the vehicles featured in Disney's latest 3D movie Tron: Legacy, set to debut at nationwide cinemas next week.
