Transmitting energy without wires is not a new thing. In fact, renowned scientist Nikola Tesla demonstrated wireless energy transmission by means of electrostatic induction back in 1891.
Despite the continuos research in this domain, the wireless electricity never got to be used on a large scale and the big idea of sending large amounts of energy from space down to Earth remained just a dream, because you know... petrol.

However, the technology is currently being upgraded for small distance use and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) just announced that it will begin testing of its newly developed wireless battery charging system for its plug-in hybrids and EVs.

The automaker’s charging system is using magnetic-resonance technology, which transmits electricity by using magnetic resonance resulted from changes in magnetic field intensity between an emitting coil on the ground and a receiving coil on the vehicle.

Toyota’s system can reduce drops in power transmission efficiency that is caused by misalignment or height differences between the two coils. The company is also working to minimize electromagnetic interference on nearby equipment.
