The “unintended acceleration lawsuit” will cost Japanese automaker Toyota no less than $16 million (€12.3 million), the company and Orange County prosecutors said last week.
According to Detroit News, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas claimed misleading business practices, stating Toyota had concealed the safety issues that eventually led to a 14 million vehicle recall in 2009 and 2010. However, despite being charged with “unlawful, unfair, deceptive, and fraudulent business practices”, Toyota is still refusing to admit fault.
"Having addressed floor mat and 'sticky pedal' issues with effective and durable solutions, we are gratified that Toyota vehicles are once again widely recognized as among the safest and most reliable on the road," Christopher P Reynolds, an attorney and vice president for Toyota, said in a statement.
Last year, Toyota agreed to pay $10 million (€7.6 million) after an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and three family members were killed in a faulty Toyota-built Lexus.
