Toyota Sales Jumped 27.7 Percent in July

It's no secret that automakers selling cars in the United States experienced a huge boost in sales last week as the government scrapping programme supported Americans in purchasing around 100,000 new cars. Toyota, still holding the world's number one carmaker title, posted a 27.7 percent sales increase last month compared to June 2009, but still down 11.4 percent over the July 2008 figures.

Specifically, the Toyota Division sold 156,355 cars, down 10.8 percent from the same period last year. The Lexus Division lost ground as well, with deliveries amounting to 18,517 units, a drop of 16.5 percent from July 2008. As for the best selling models, Camry and Camry hybrid posted sales of 33,974 units. the all-new Prius achieved sales of 19,173 units, up 29.7 percent from the year-ago month.

Scion posted sales of 6,754 units in July, with the xB being the best selling product in the country. Americans bought 2,838 units of the xB and 1,939 units of the tC sports coupe.

“Beyond the tangible economic stimulus, the positive environmental benefits of the CARS program is clear to see,” said TMS President Jim Lentz. “The program is achieving its goal of increasing fuel efficiency. CARS-related Toyota sales, over the seven days alone, will save customers an estimated 8 million gallons of gas and 20 million dollars in gas spending over the next year.”

Last month, the Japanese manufacturer sold a total of 24,295 hybrid vehicles, up 19.3 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Toyota Division recorded sales of 22,853 hybrids for the month. Lexus Division reported July sales of 1,442 hybrids.
