As you may know, NASCAR as seen today has its roots in modified moonshine smuggler’s cars that were raced in between the routine booze deliveries in the Prohibition time. And because of their illegal activity, the cars were often raced on sand or dirt roads.
The dirt track was still used when this kind of racing became official later, but the last NASCAR touring series held on such raceway was in 1970. Now, the NASCAR Truck Series is heading for the Eldora Speedway half-mile dirt track for a one-night only special race today (Wed. 24th), to reconnect both racing teams and fans with the sport’s early roots.

Toyota teams will be present there too and national touring dirt racer Scott Bloomquist will drive the No.51 Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports. "It's going to be something different I'm sure, but it's a race car and I've driven a lot of race cars," said Bloomquist. "Never a truck, but it's still a race car."

The trucks will be fitted with strategically placed mesh shields and hood deflectors to hold off debris kicked up from the track. See a few pictures from the qualifying down bellow.
