The tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear disasters back in 2011 caused widespread power outages in Japanese communities such as Ohira, but a remote Toyota plant in the region managed to recover quickly, thanks to its “home made” electricity.
The plant produces its own power using a gas-fired system that delivers 7,800 kW, about 70 percent of the facility’s needs. And electricity is not the only benefit as the factory recycles heat from burning the gas and uses it to dry the paint on the cars, while the hot water from the gas turbine is used into a nearby greenhouse to grow green peppers.
Moreover, the plant can supply electric power to the nearby village of Ohira in case of another disaster, being backed up by solar panels too.
