The pre-collision systems installed on today’s vehicles are promising to achieve the same success as the anti-lock braking system (ABS) has now, being offered as standard on pretty much all vehicles.
Toyota’s pre-collision system uses a millimeter-wave radar in its bumper to detect vehicles or obstacles in front of the vehicle. If the system anticipates a collision it will warn the driver. If the person behind the wheel takes no action, the pre-collision system will still emit warning signals and will prepare the brakes for some hard use.
If the driver still fails to take measures, the system will tighten up the seatbelts and apply the brakes to either prevent the impact or minimize the damage, depending on the speed of the vehicle.
