Toyota has recently announced to switch back to the old car air conditioner refrigerant R134a in Europe as the public is concerned about the safety of the new R1234yf.
At the beginning of 2013, the European Commission said that only the new R1234yf refrigerant should be used in automotive air conditioners in order to meet climate protection requirements.
However, Daimler conducted tests and found it to be highly flammable, raising risks when being involved in a crash.
Toyota started its own tests with the new refrigerant but they found it pretty safe. However, due to public concerns and negative media reports, the Japanese automaker decided to temporary switch back to the previous R134a refrigerant. The affected models include the Prius Plus, Lexus GS and the GT 86.
