As the hybrid and EV culture grows rapidly and every automaker tries to come with new solutions on the market, several Japanese automakers have reported to work on a jointly developed charging infrastructure for the eco vehicles in the the Country of the Rising Sun.
Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have recently announced to work on a joint project that will promote and install charging points for electric-powered vehicles in Japan.
There are three charging methods available for electric-powered vehicles at the moment - basic charging (the car is charged at home), destination charging (charging can be performed at shopping malls, DIY stores and family restaurants) and en-route charging (done in expressway roadside service areas, gas stations and convenience stores).

- Promoting the installation of chargers in Japan - studies are underway to increase the number of normal charging point by 8,000 and quick charging ones by 4,000.
- Promoting charger installation by temporarily bearing part of the installation and maintenance costs.
- Building a charging infrastructure network that allows more a convenient charging to hybrid and EV owners (such as charging their vehicles at any point with the same card).
- Working with government agencies and local governments to further expand sales of the next-generation hybrid and electric vehicles.
