Back in 2011, Toyota was knocked off the top spot as the world’s largest automaker, by GM. This was due in part to the recession which had also hit Japan and its industry, coupled with the destructive tsunami which hit Japan last year in March and really took its toll.
According to first-quarter sales figures, in 2012, Toyota has managed to shift 2.49 million vehicles, taking back the crown from GM which sold 2.28 million vehicles in the same period. Third place is occupied by Volkswagen with 2.16 million vehicles.

Thanks to their very swift recovery from last year’s tragedy, coupled with an improving World economy and their strong sales figures in Europe, Toyota is back on top and we don’t see how any other automaker could challenge its position in the near future.
