Over the weekend, Toyota took the wraps off both the European GT 86 sports coupe and its Japanese cousin names simply ‘86’. With only 200 horsepower at its disposal, people have been booing the manufacturer for giving it hothatch-like output.
Driving feel is something that’s transmitted by word of mouth, so the only way to really sell the underpowered 2+2 is to underprice it. According to Autocar magazine, Toyota insiders have said it will cost somewhere in the region of £28,000 when it reaches the UK next summer.
For the money, you get a manual six-speed gearbox, the limited slip differential and a a 53/47 weight distribution. The GT 86 will have MacPherson strut front suspension and rear double wishbone suspension.
By comparison, a brand new Scirocco GT with 210 horsepower and a manual costs £24,705, but it has one of those electronic differentials that brake the inside wheel, and it’s not as fast as the GT 86 either.
